Valerio Melandri-The first Italian blog on fundraising

I like the Pan di Stelle ... even in fundraising

I like the Pan di Stelle not only because they are good but because they teach you to do so: if you buy a pack on one side the recipe to make them at home. It 'a bit' like what I write on my blog or my collaborators and other users on fundraising.it The difference is that you should not even spend to buy the package, sometimes I write about how to do or not do fundraising . All this is called collaboration. Seth Godin says in the introduction to his latest book ( "The children will be first," read it is also valid for the non-profit) a phrase that I think might fit well to the Italian situation of fund-raising:

"Who buys my books or read my blog or call me to take conferenzae in its organization already knows what to do. Are people who, in the field of organizational development of commercial activities and the dissemination of ideas are cute and even diamonds. They already know how to design a great website or how to create a successful blog. But do not. Do not do it for society, leaders, partners or colleagues will not allow them to take effective action. And 'as if their briefcase was full of propane, compressed, but I could not make it explode "

What is happening now? What is breaking down the wall of silence on fundraising before was one thing for a few people today know the fundraising and may, by word of mouth and blogs on fundraising that have been created in recent years to introduce it to others.

What is the big problem of fundraising? That is not shared is divided, what do you do? I know it well:

  • if you do not agree you must destroy the other (we recently had an attack on our websites that have been obscured for a while 'time. Our provider has described the attack as "done with skill and with a force and unusual willingness to break everything "). Another time ... a "friend" instead of collaborating in the construction of the item "fundraising" on www.wikipedia.it removed the link to our site for free information www.fundraising.it. When he did because he told me that he had been in error. In both cases we know exactly who it was, the Internet has the defect that leaves a mark .... And I'd have thousands and thousands of other examples.
  • If you are not able to do fundraising copied without mention.
  • if you really want to feel the first, a sort of "caste" does not cooperate, even sending a simple material for research about the history of fundraising, made by my degree.

The fundraiser that operate in this way are still in the old world, what has happened for a long time but it is likely to end: the world of sharing, the enlargement of knowledge, sharing of ideas is the future not only fundraising but throughout the nonprofit (make sure to read this book if you do not believe and then tell me what you think).

Just think how many nonprofit organizations exist that make the exact same thing in the same city and do not talk, double action with an unimaginable waste of resources (not only the state is in fact to waste money ricordiamocelo). A friend of mine told me today (via Skype): "if in Italy the ONP rather not work together with their staff a bit 'more beyond the political barriers that divide them there would be a tremendous resource savings," I say ditto I also in fundraising. But words such as open-source sharing are very often on deaf ears in the nonprofit sector (although widely used in the lectures).

Concludes the book by Godin and always think it's really a fitting description: "At that point I am speaking. Porto fireworks. Fires are not particularly noisy, nor powerful, but are still able to attract the attention and, above all, to blow up the propane you already have. " To me the fireworks fascinate me and I can use more ...

Seth Godin's book you cite is really nice, I'm reading. It 'almost to the level of his previous "Permission Marketing", indeed it is the trend today

For me choose again, maybe not them but other artists. Yesterday I read of a famous Italian pianist in the East that he was glad that Taiwan or China, there were sites from which you could free download her music and that's because his records are not distributed there. He said: "It is positive because it means that if I'm going to play concerts there will be people who will come to see me because they heard my music." The record industry is now in fact the majority of its profits on the singers' concerts and merchandising and not on the disks then radiohead should be happy with what they have collected. I do not know how to translate this in Italian fundraising, however this is my contribution to post comments on Melandri.

    Dear Prof. Melandri,
I will say does not want to desecrate your very serious argument, but instead of the recipe of pan of stars, you could start with that of the chocolate muffin?
I remain convinced that Maria Grammatico Sicilian cannoli are the best in the world (in Erice-Trapani) and only in this case, I hope that no one can ever copy them. Fortunately, not so much of Mary, but fortunately for us because his hands are miracles that cost just a few euros ... (just a greedy can understand the ecstasy of that sweet ..).
That the approach to fund raising is changing in Italy is certainly thanks to the few, if not very few. At the beginning of my work, in 2001, I thought we were worse than a secret, nobody said anything ... let alone tell you where to copy the recipe for his favorite cookies. Internet has been and is very useful for our work, but without good pastry, my Sundays and those of many other colleagues, would be very sad ...

I do not like the pan of stars .... But no matter. What I mean is that they always have in hand the recipe will guarantee the success of the product. It 'a good start but there is always a path to do. (Also important is who is in the kitchen): sometimes the sponge stars burn, sometimes they are not identical to the original are sometimes better than the original because we've put effort, time and something else (in short, is not a production standardized as the Barilla), however, is already important to have a good base of ingredients ... then ... else you do it .. and all those who work with you.

    Hello Melandri
I agree with what you say. Although knowledge is profit, and then we the NPOs so generous money, because we are not in this area?
I propose, if not already is already being done, organize an annual meeting, however you want, the feast of fr, laboratories, fr, fr fair, day of fr, fr ... gathering where, in addition to sections of education, we could be moments dedicated to the comparison between "equal". The moment of mutual understanding, not only virtual, makes great aggregation, collaboration and exchange durable.
We did not say that the best way to do fund raising is meeting face to face? I think it's the same thing for professional growth.

    regards,
    Giusy

ps I am proud that the letter for Christmas cards has been taken, for example (duly corrected) on the site of fr, thanks!

The issue of sharing of knowledge is increasingly a key issue. I personally believe in the "collaborative competition", where the collaboration is to have a mutually beneficial practice, while recognizing that the market has rules to be respected and that we are competing in the same arena, which is not an infinite space (as a number of donors ). Share the problems addressed and solutions identified between actors operating in a market similar means improving the market (and the concept of "peer leaders" for example). Without of course revealing creative ideas or innovative projects, that is part of competitiveness, and you can not touch!
But it only works if more players are available to the meeting and exchange, in order to increase the opportunities for improvement for all.
Often I found myself not having to say "what could be done, but to make this happen" good. " Everyone, if they read and study, in theory, know what to do to collect money. The Case Study is to do it, and do it well on the field.
Look at that beautiful initiative in San Francisco between colleagues / competitors fundraiser http://www.dersf.org/mc/page.do?sitePageId=35995&orgId=der. It's called FAB: Fundraisers Anxiety Busters, and the name is already made! My blog is precisely in this direction.
    Hello, Francesco
PS: I personally do not care too much who is not participating, is a free choice to be respected. And since this is a small world, you know who you mean, better to name names then in my opinion. But it found that part sincerely controversy's sake, much better when they build!

Dear Francis (Quistelli), but where have I been up to now? How come we never met. Long live there 'someone with whom you speak the same language! You're right about everything, even the PS. But I am a bigot danntamente Catholic and I have always taught that "says the sin but not the sinner." Saying the sinner would do controversy. I say the drama, story and example, just to understand the problem. I have no interest whatsoever campbiare people's heads, not even try, especially for some people. There are so many and such violent abuses, unjust treatment shameful, wicked, insulting that I had to endure, that I have no hope that someone will realize how bad he is doing to the world of fund raising. But I need, with examples to make it clear to those who do not know, to understand. Here are two conceptions of life, not just the job.
It's better to be a bad person with a good character, or a good person with a bad temper?

And they are not part of their market, but tomorrow I might be, because I have come to look.
You see, dear James, the point here is not 'to become all "pacifists" and throw away the gun when the other has it, and you tip him.
The point is that it takes "to rebuild the economy of the other", otherwise it is very difficult that the other can interact with you.
When there 'the famous phrase "turn the other cheek" that some see as "facts hit twice," I say that you make a mistake.
You hand the "other cheek" means "give way to another to rebuild its economy with you" so he can return to the relationship with you and you too gain.
That's why forgiveness is "economic", because I would lose the other to build a successful economy with me and therefore I, who live by the fact that there are others (can not live alone!) Will gain . Regal is, but in an intelligent way: "not pearls before swine."
Why ask pearls do not know what to do and therefore are not "cheap for them and if they are not for them, they are not for me. And 'silly gift pearls before swine, because no one makes money, plus I lose it.
So "not pearls before swine," but only "turn the other cheek" to the end of its reconstruction (which is also convenient to me). You know?

If Radiohead had "given pearls before swine" or have "port the other cheek", will tell the story.
