The first-Valerio Melandri Italian blog on fundraising

I like the Loaf Stars ... even in fundraising

I like the Loaf Stars not only because they are good but why do you teach them if you buy a package you will find the recipe on one side to make them at home. It 'sa bit like what I write on my blog or my co-workers and other users of fundraising.it: the difference is you do not even have to spend to buy the package, sometimes I write about how to do or not do fundraising . All this is called collaboration. Seth Godin says in the introduction of his latest book (" The little ones will be first ", read it is also valid for the nonprofit), a phrase that I think might fit well to the Italian situation of fundraising:

"Who buys my books, or read my blog or call me to keep conferenzae in his organization already knows what to do. These are people who, in the field of organizational development of commercial activities and dissemination of ideas, are cute and even brilliant. They already know how to design a great website or how to create a successful blog. But they do not. Do not do it because society, leaders, partners or colleagues do not allow them to take effective action. And 'as if it were their briefcases full of compressed propane, but they failed to blow it up "

What is happening now? What is breaking down the wall of silence about fundraising, the first thing was a few people today know about fundraising and can, through word of mouth and blog about fundraising that have been created in recent years to introduce it to others.

What is the big issue of fundraising? What you do not share, is divided, what do you do? I know it well:

  • unless you agree you must destroy the other (we recently had an attack on our websites that have been obscured for a while 'time. Our provider has called the attack "made with skill and with a force and a unusual willingness to break all "). Another time ... a "friend" instead of working to build in "fundraising" on www.wikipedia.it removed the link to our site for free information www.fundraising.it . When he did because he told me that he had been in error. In both cases we know exactly who it was, the Internet has the defect that leaves its mark .... And I would have thousands and thousands of other examples.
  • If you are not able to do fundraising is copied without citing.
  • if you really want to feel the first, a sort of "caste" is not working, not simply by sending the material for research on the history of fundraising, made by my degree.

The fundraiser that operate in this way are still in the old world, what will be successful for a long time but that is bound to end: the world of sharing, dell'allargare knowledge, sharing of ideas is the future of not only fundraising but of all the nonprofit (just read this book if you do not believe and then tell me what you think).

Just think how many nonprofit organizations are doing the same identical thing in the same city and did not speak, double action with an unimaginable waste of resources (it is not only the state to waste money, let us remember). A friend of mine told me today (via skype): "if in Italy nonprofits rather than cooperate with each other work together a little 'more beyond the political barriers that divide you would save enormous resources", I say ditto I am also in fundraising. But words like open-source sharing are often empty words in the nonprofit sector (although widely used in the lectures).

Concludes the book by Godin and always think it's really an apt description: "At that point I am speaking. Harbour fireworks. Fires are not particularly loud or powerful, but they are still able to attract the attention and, above all, to blow up the propane that you already have. " To me the fireworks and they fascinate me more than I can use ...

    Only one case:
Radiohead's new CD can 'be downloaded from the site with a minimum bid

Small detail, only 40% (including myself) donated to download. The media and 'of 1.5 €. Yields and 'state of 3 million against the usual 8 to 12 million. I'm really curious to see if the next time will choose a sale yet so '"social".

For me choose again, maybe not them but other artists. Yesterday I read an Italian pianist who was popular in Eastern glad to taiwan or in china there are sites where you could download his music and that's because his records are not distributed there. He said: "is positive because it means that if I go to concerts there will be people who will come to see me because they heard my music." The record industry is now in fact the majority of its profits on concerts and merchandising of the singers and not so hard on the radiohead should be happy with what they have collected. I do not know how to translate this into Italian fundraising, however this is my contribution to post comments on Melandri.

    Dear Prof. Melandri,
I will say you do not want to desecrate the very serious argument, but instead of pan the recipe of stars, you could not start with the chocolate muffins?
I remain convinced that Maria Grammatico cannoli are the best in the world (at Erice-Trapani) and only in this case, I hope that nobody could ever copy. Fortunately, not so much of Mary, but fortunately for us because his hands are miracles that cost just a few dollars ... (just a glutton can understand the ecstasy of that sweet ..).
That the approach to fundraising is changing in Italy is definitely on for a few, but very few. At the beginning of my work, in 2001, worse than I thought we were a secret society, nobody will say anything ... let alone tell you where to copy the recipe of his favorite cookies. The Internet has been and is very useful for our work, but without good pastry, my Sundays and those of many other colleagues, would be very sad ...

I do not like the pan of stars .... but no matter. What I mean is that they always have the recipe in hand, guarantees the success of the product. It 'a good start but there is always a path to follow. (Also important is who's in the kitchen): sometimes the sponge stars burn out, sometimes they are not identical to the original are sometimes better than the original because you have put effort, time and even more (well, not a production standardized as Barilla), however, is already important to have good ingredients ... then ... else you do it .. and all those who work with you.

    Hello Melandri,
I agree with what you say. Even knowledge is profit, and then, we of nonprofits so generous in money, because we're not in this area?
I propose, if it has not been already made, to organize an annual meeting, call it what you want, the feast of fr, fr laboratories Fair, fr, fr the day, rally fr ... where, in addition to training sections, we could be times devoted to the comparison between "equal". The moment of mutual understanding, not just virtual, makes great aggregation, collaboration and exchange sustainable.
We did not say that the best way to do fund raising is meeting face to face? I think it's the same thing for professional growth.

    Regards,
    Giusy

ps I am proud that the letter for Christmas cards has been taken as (properly corrected) on the site of fr, thanks!

The issue of sharing of knowledge is increasingly a key issue. Personally I believe in "collaborative competition", where collaboration is mutually beneficial to have a real, though aware that the market has some rules that apply and that we are competing in the same arena, which is not an infinite space (defined as the number of donors ). Share the problems faced and solutions found among actors operating in a similar market means to improve the market (it is the concept of "peer leaders" for example). Without obviously revealing creative ideas or innovative projects, that is part of the competitive ability, and you can not touch!
But this only works if more players are available for meeting and exchange, so as to increase the opportunities for improvement for everyone.
Often I found myself not having to say "what was there to do" but to make this happen "well". Everyone, if they read and study, they know in theory what to do to collect money. The probelma to do it, and do it well, on the field.
Look what a nice initiative in San Francisco with colleagues / competitors fundraiser http://www.dersf.org/mc/page.do?sitePageId=35995&orgId=der . It's called FAB fundraiser anxiety busters, and the name is already enlightening! My blog goes in this direction.
    Hello, Francis
PS: personally I would not mind too much about those who do not participate, is a free choice to be respected. And since this is a small world, you know who you mean, better to name names then in my opinion. But that part of the controversy found a truly end in itself, much better when you build!

Dear Francis (Quistelli), but where have I been up to now? How come we never met. Long live there 'someone with whom you speak the same language! You're right about everything, even on the PS. But I am a devout Catholic and danntamente I have always taught that "sin is said, but not the sinner." Saying the sinner would do polemics. I say the tragedy, as the story, just to understand the problem. I do not care at all campbiare people's heads, even trying, especially for some people. The abuses are so many and such violent, unjust, shameful treatment, bad, I had to endure insulting, that I have no hope that someone realizes how bad is doing to the world of fundraising. But I need, with examples, to understand, who does not know, to understand. Here are two views of life, not just labor.
It's better to be a bad person with a good character, or a good person with a bad temper?

And they are not part of their market, but tomorrow I might be, because I have come seeking.
You see, dear James, the point here is not 'to become all "pacifists" and throw away the gun, when the other has it, and you tip him.
The point is that it takes "to rebuild the economy of the other", otherwise it is very difficult that the other can interact with you.
When there 's famous phrase "turn the other cheek" which some interpret as "facts hit twice," I say you make a mistake.
Give the "other cheek" means: "give way to another to rebuild its economy with you", so that he can return in relationship with you and earn YOU TOO.
This is why forgiveness is "cheap" because I allow forgiveness to another to rebuild a positive economics with me and therefore I, who live by the fact that there are others (not live alone!) Will gain . Giving yes, but in an intelligent way: "not pearls before swine."
Why the swine the pearls do not know what to do and therefore are not "economic for them" and if they are not for them, they are not for me either. It 's stupid to give pearls to swine, because no one earns, and the more I lose myself.
And therefore "not pearls before swine," but only "turn the other cheek" to the end of its reconstruction (which is also in me). I explain myself?

If Radiohead "as pearls before swine" or have "the other cheek", will tell the story.
