The University of stupidity

Data: January 16, 2008

I am a university professor, and I am a man who loves freedom. In classrooms where I teach, in this blog, in all places where I can have room for all comments, those who disagree, those who do not agree. I must, as a man who loves freedom and as a university student from judging the serious incident that occurred yesterday at the "Sapienza" (I would say "stupid"). If the spiritual leader of about a billion people can not speak in universities, this means the death of the University. The University is the place par excellence of freedom and reason. I am in university I work with passion. For this reason I have done today, by letter, to invite Pope Benedict XVI for a keynote address at the inauguration of Master in Fund Raising to be held tomorrow, January 17th at 10:30 am. (Unfortunately ... I do not think that will come ...), but I still think a concrete gesture to show that universities are still people who care about the reason and freedom.

Now seems an all against all and not "cave a spider hole", there is a solution. If you do not allow the Pope to go to an inauguration of a university year solves the problems of the world's poor, then Italy or the Italian university.

Unfortunately, this story, see all losers: the University "secular", which should allow everyone (even those who do not represent more than 1 billion people ... it would just be an idea ... not shared by anyone ... for the chance to be heard) of "reflection" in public, representatives of the Church in question (which should really take charge of situations facing "difficult", so important is the message you want to leave), ready for a big day of protest against protest

Personally I think that around the story has created a mess, fueled by ratings hypocrites, obtuse and often, unfortunately, political partisans of the Italian media. The only thing that seems to enjoy an incredible fortune in this country seems to be just the mass disinformation, produced by the bad faith of certain characters cathode kneeling and those same politicians, compact, applaud the words of people like Mastella, hurling against the Italian judiciary. Well, these same characters have on several occasions (s) spoke of "censorship" of the Pope's words, the attack on freedom of expression and the boldest, even the attack on the secular nature of knowledge (and here it takes a great face tough)! The brave professors of wisdom, a closer look and wanting to investigate without causing prejudice the true meaning of the protest, were not expressed against some of the dialogue and confrontation between faith and religion! The inauguration of the academic year is a 'SYMBOLIC opportunity that has nothing to do with the dialogue and confrontation typical of a conference or a normal academic debate on any subject. And this is the professors and the student protesters (albeit in a more "colorful") have reiterated over and over again. As the occasion "symbolic" and not belonging the head of a religion (whatever that is) SYMBOLS to their scientific knowledge, the inauguration of the academic year of a secular university should be chaired by a representative of a more secular divorced from any footprint ideological and confessional. The keynote address, and secondly, is not equivalent to a simple speech or report, but it represents the address of Universality. It therefore has a high symbolic value, because it expresses a clear position and precise and gives a special character in which the institution is required. No one, therefore, has spoken out against a possible confrontation with the papal institution, as opposed to what they want us to believe. The problem is that of discussion and debate was not absolutely, the Pope is at the Inauguration of the academic year of a secular university, to cite an example offhand, like Margherita Hack the window Sunday Angelus! The comparison must oppotune have the seats and opputune mode, otherwise it is an unjust and unilateral invasion of the field. To conclude, I do not really think that in Italy there is a problem of secularism exasperated but rather the opposite. So, I do not understand the outcry of many Catholics in any other country in the world would enjoy so much importance and consideration (nobody ever convince me of the idea that Italy is a secular country)! And if the attitude of many defenders the secular state takes forms sometimes questionable in terms of "political correctness" is precisely because here in Italy we must defend it tooth and nail those rare spaces of expression secular and liberal than the rest of Europe are largely protected and guaranteed. Elsewhere there is no need to imbavagliarsi or attach banners to defend the secular nature of a public institution ... and this is what's really sad.

    A small student angry.

Take the most 'large as possible on the Pope
Joseph Ratzinger is a university professor, probably one of the men of greater culture of the century (taken from Urs von Balthasar, Henry De Lubac and perhaps men of culture at this level there were very few). It was not, for example, John Paul II was an average college professor (and this is seen also in his writings, which are anything but ordinary strategic, very repetitive, and all in all, not innovative from the theological If anything just from the ministry. The famous "Do not be afraid of Christ" is one example).

The University is the place of reason and freedom, where university professors should be able to talk, and other academics, though not agree should be listening to them.
In a democracy, "the dissent quote" is absolutely allowed, the claim for moral reasons as well, but the boycott on grounds of diversity of views, I would say not.

The Pope makes us in college, and in particular the opening of the academic year? At least three reasons:
1 - is a great (perhaps the most 'big) European intellectual living-the university is the place of intellectuals.
2 - and 'a head of state - and the universities' honored to have a head of state guest.
3 - is a former university professor (also a great level) - the university is the place of university professors

And as you see I eliminated the fact that it is the spiritual leader of about a billion people.

Your example of Margherita Hack is wrong, because that one is a Catholic or a Communist, or a layman, or a filodofo, or a scientist or a sexist or a feminist, or un'astronomo, or anyone else, is entitled University of citizenship in a 'State, possibly all in the same way (and in fact I am not aware that the Pope is going to inaugurate the academic year every year ...). Conversely under the window of the Angelus who wants to go there, and the church (which is a nonprofit independent orgnizzazione state) decides its governance and those who want to speak independently and is answerable to the voters, much less to Italian citizens.
It makes me a bit 'funny Ingrao says that "if the Pope goes to college, go lay in the Vatican", because it's like saying "Ingrao university, but the Rector of the Catholic Festival of Unity". Ben is whether the Rector of the Catholic goes to Unity Day, but Ingrao and 'master in his house (the Festival of the unit) who wants to call. And if you do not want to call the rector of the Catholic festival no one can 'claim, let alone Catholics!.
They are simply statements that make no sense.

In other words, the Italian state (of which the university The stupid part is required to listen to all the citizens of any idea they are and give everyone a chance to meet, within the limits of mutual respect), the Italian Church is free to those who want to talk about the way you want. The Church is not the state.
In other words: Margherita Hack has no right to talk to the window when the Angelus is not the Church that invites the contrary if the University prohibits the nonsense word to the city, university professor, and, moreover, the Bishop of Rome, Joseph Ratzinger is no longer 'a secular state ... but the confessional, or the vestibule ... More than toleration of racism!

Ah the wisdom dell'anticlericale, Mason, secular, liberal Conte di Cavour! "Free Church in a Free State" .... he said "Free Church and Free State," but said "IN ...." never quite understood!

    Thanks for your comment!

Ps I do not think I've ever read anything more '"secular" as the Pope's speech that he could not pronounce ... Check it out, it is illuminating about what it means to REALLY "tolerance."

And after re-read every sunset, Ratzinger's speech at the university, and they'll understand how he managed the relationship! Never imposing, always propose! But beware: "tolerance" does not mean that in the name of tolerance, I have to shut up because I say things that you might not agree!

Well, if "tolerance" is to say that my truth is bigger than yours, are not so well!

Expressing dissent can. And if the tone of the protest degenerate, alas, this is not always prevedile, nor containable. But, regardless of the reason more or less valid for the protest, I rifletterei also on the decision taken by the Pope
Regarding the reasons for cancellation, in fact, it seems that the cancellation of the visit to the university was not a choice dictated by security issues.
Behind the cancellation is no longer a problem of image of danger to the safety of Benedict XVI, as all measures to ensure the orderly conduct of the visit had been developed.
The visit of the Pope, then, would be canceled more than anything to the effect that might have a challenge to the Pope, caught on camera and that would rapidly around the world.
Accept the challenge (which involved a minority after all) instead of escape, I would have seemed a good way to convey a message of tolerance and humility and a great opportunity for dialogue and exchange.
Maybe the problem is that the Pope is more accustomed to having in front a crowd of people who say "so be it" instead of "but I think".

    Dear all,
Thanks for these beautiful and useful your comments. I quite agree with what he says Miche. "The visit of the Pope, then, would be canceled more than anything to the effect that might have been a challenge to the Pope, caught on camera and that would rapidly around the world.". It 's very likely that there is some truth in that statement. Anyway, it is certainly true that we received a phone call to Cardinal Camillo Ruini, by the Italian Government which asked explicitly "renounce the visit." Many have lost, and 'true Miche. In many. But we turn the page, tomorrow will be the Festival of Fundraising to keep fellow, I'll get to the next post. after. vm

would certainly represented an example of Christian humility: Jesus would have preferred that popemobile?
