Do fundraising for a small town, where to start

Data: April 28, 2008

I recently wrote a councilor of a small town to ask my advice on how can a small town start doing fundraising for the construction of a public facility.
Here's to you our email exchange. VM

(The Festival of Fund Raising approaches 8-9-10 May!)

Dear Dr. Melandri
I am writing from a small hilly town in the province of Rimini, Montegridolfo, for advice about a necessary and
possible action to raise funds to support implementation of the new preschool in self. As you can well understand a challenge in the challenge, before the fundraiser, then their use through the work of volunteers, assisted by technical staff on site for the construction of public works ... little or zero, examples of public self-construction, alas.
The school, therefore, for us as a garrison and as such everyone should participate in its realization, even fisicamente.Detto I ask this tip on how to organize a fundraising campaign and what actions to avoid the first?
Thank you for your greetings ascolto.Cari.

Dear [...]
is a good advice what she asks.
First of all would like to start dall'esplicitare the need for a preschool in the place where you live or who they all share the need, because, as she says, a small town should be a wide acceptance of what you are doing.
Then he'd start with a specific request to local organizations, such as the Foundation CR Rimini, who sometimes deliver funds for the construction of schools and kindergartens, and that can give a hearty hand for the construction.
Obviously a helping hand from another institution may not be sufficient and therefore it is necessary to start a fundraising campaign among the population as widely as possible. is necessary to make it as transparent as the council, make public the budget, explain the needs of the (asylum costs x, y we have, maybe we can provide the foundation z, you can give us citizens w) Avoid saying "donate what you can" set your precise proposals for donation (€ 10, € 20, € 50, € 100) and for a specific purpose, a lounge, a games room, etc..
If you are interested in this I also made the Italian version of a book that is here

These are just some initial advice and I hope will be useful

    Dear Valerio,
often do not participate in online discussions in person - although I am an avid reader - but faced with this topic I can not help but intervene. The reason is simple: in this period were engaged in a fundraising campaign in favor of my little town of residence.
The campaign covers the cultural activities promoted by the city: the city council, giving up isolated events or actions "spot", is committed to co-ordinate an annual program of cultural events, and organizations working on their territory. Given this schedule, we have forwarded requests to specific entities of the region and activated strategies of involvement of local companies. I must say that it is more difficult than I had expected: although the quality of cultural offerings, most of all weighs negatively affecting generalized to the government, which is seen, particularly by private companies (but often also by the citizens themselves) as an enemy to be resisted ...
Do not know yet if the company succeeds, but it certainly has produced an interesting side result: the administration - by entering into direct dialogue with the territory (the companies we met) - are becoming aware of the gap between the public and stakeholders private and will impact positively on these reports, forms and all modes of study and develop.

    Dear Councillor,
is worthy of his efforts. Citizens already pay many taxes and asking if the hand is still that of the public do not think you have much success at least with respect to fund-raising activities addressed to the local population. This will not be the speech with any foundations or large and medium-sized businesses in the area, but in general I wonder how many might be interested in building a new school? It 'felt as a demand by the citizens? How much money is needed to build the school? How many children are in school and how many you expect in the next ten years? Taxes, such as ICI and TARSU are the maximum allowed?
I do not know the territory, but it would be easier to buy a school bus transporting children and school in an adjacent municipality.
    Good job
