The first-Valerio Melandri Italian blog on fundraising

The fundraising is not always a bed of roses

Data: May 19, 2008

I will give you an email that a reader of the blog as well as a member of a nonprofit organization has written to me.
I think that highlights some difficulties in fundraising:

1 - The fundraising is not done in a short time: the results are not overnight but in a multi-year
2 - The cost of fundraising and the lack of will or ability to invest in fundraising push many associations to pay for a percentage of the fundraising
3 - The fundraising is and must be integrated throughout the life of the association: it is also economic management, it is also decision-making process, is also dedicated human resource management.

My answers are in italics after the questions posed to me a player.

Dear Prof. Melandri

the contact to ask a question in the hope that I can recommend the way forward.

The contact in as the spokesman of the young Italian Association [...]. The '[...] is a rare disease that causes the urogenital malformations at birth.

The association in a few months of operation has managed to achieve good results as national meetings to collect tens of [...] patients and their families, but also for the inclusion in the list of rare diseases of the Ministry (in fact still nearing completion).

Like all associations came at the time of failing to meet the growing expenses and costs and why you are questioning the ways in which to raise funds.

The Shareholders Association has identified in the periodic self-taxation, and in 'taking a fund raiser the two roads.

I am writing to ask advice on the second of these.
The association would like to hire a fund raiser with a salary and be able to recognize the content of a commission on funds raised. This requirement is set by the fact that there is no money in hand (but solodebiti) to right from the 'early to ensure a reasonable salary.

In a previous email exchange she (together with Francesco Santini) I already illustraste the delicacy of the work of the ethics commission and do not do it when I asked how you propose as a fund raiser in the move.

Not being now in a position to do so for the Association of '[...] I ask councils to guide their choice:

- Is unthinkable move in that direction Assuming the non-ethical?
There are laws that prohibit taking a fundraiser to pay a percentage. The Italian association of fundraisers is not recommended, but not prohibit, the use of this method of remuneration. My opinion already knows this and so I certainly recommend him.

- There are contracts like the one described above?
There is no contract category, simply take inspiration from contracts imagine other professionals in other sectors partly paid share (sales representatives)

- Through what channels I could look for a fund raiser (she has a few students interested?)?
Master's students are already engaged in all stages. Other fundraisers are those channels where you can find to put an ad on Work Life.

- What are the minimum time required for a fund raiser to be able to bring a full system, the activity of fund raising?
This question is impossible to answer. It depends on so many factors, however, certainly not in a single year. I would say at least three years.

- What are the alternatives to be able to immediately cash (loans)?
Do not advise it at all, especially if you already have debts.

- Whereas the Association has no office and associates are all over Italy where he would seek more strategic fund raiser (prsidente close to that currently is in charge of PR, or in cities like Rome and Milan for reasons of expediency) ?
Close to those who can directly control the activities of the fundraiser.

Thanks for the time you will want to devote myself.

Dear, welcome back. How was Berlin?
Just to comment with respect to the email shown above, unfortunately, often the voice of fundraising, budgets and budgets of the ANP, appears only on the left, that of "revenue", never in the right of the outputs (the "Investment") .
We were taught that an entrepreneur, among other features, must have a certain appetite for risk, this also applies to "social entrepreneurs" from certainties do not hardly ever get great results.

    Courage!

Dear Valerio, by sheer coincidence in these hours is posted on the website http://www.professionetica.it an article co-written by me and Francesca Zagni, vice president of ASSIF, whose title is "Compensation as a percentage? No thank you. " In it is reflected and commented on the section of the code of ethics ASSIF that is the issue of remuneration of the fundraiser which carry an excerpt: "... the member ASSIF has the power to propose and accept remuneration which, in addition to a fixed base, may also involve a variable component linked to the performance achieved. The variable pay (bonuses or premiums) related to achieving or exceeding collection targets must be defined in advance by mutual agreement between the member and the beneficiary organization. Members ASSIF discourage proposals for collaboration that do not involve a minimum base compensation and remuneration schemes for the variables, expressed as a percentage of donations or donors. "The small but enterprising association that is given to you could then adopt a mixed solution , which provides a base of fixed compensation and a moving part, with bonuses and / or bonuses agreed in principle, related to certain objectives and verifiable. For other comments reference Article above, to be released tomorrow, in the newsletter ProfessionEtica, avoiding to say any more. Thanks and good luck, Joe
