The heart of a fundraiser

Data: January 29, 2010

I read a nice post today on Virginia's his blog . It 'a post that talks about the work of fundraisers, what it means to work in fundraising, why choose to be fundraisers. I'll carry you, inviting you to read and comment on the blog here and Virginia.

He had just finished the Christmas campaign. Haiti and the emergency breaks out in fundraising you start over.
For Oxfam Ireland we have collected about 800 thousand euros in two weeks, with about 5000 donations and almost as many new contacts / donors, who are organizing concerts, events, shows, activities' to raise funds for Haiti. One thing never seen before to Oxfam Ireland, not even five years ago for another great disaster that has shaken the souls (and wallets) of the people, the Tsunami.
My plan for the coming months also included to come home for a visit in late January, then I think of February as the best option, now it seems that not until March I'll be able 'to leave the land of Ireland.
From the human point of view, and 'needless to say, the earthquake seems to have brought hell on earth. Personally, in front of the images on TV almost makes me close my eyes. Oxfam has lost two of its employees in the earthquake, we can count a number of dead and missing among the families of our staff in Haiti. The office of the capital and 'half destroyed'.
But the fundraising and ultimately 'a buiseness, and rides the wave of this type of emergency. The word Haiti today assume a value of magic emotionally if they collect funds, a sort of fairy dust like Peter Pan, where used, allows you to fly. Since 'fundraising must go on - after all there are other dire emergencies in the world who are not "lucky" to have such a media appeal - use the word Haiti today allows you to arrive earlier and with more' power to the hearts of people . Cynical, no?
For a fundraiser, and at these particularly 'hard to complain about their jobs, or boasted of their successes, because' people do not understand. I get home every night and meeting my roommates: the difference between me and them, 'until they can complain' that they want to work so hard, stressed, etc. etc.. I do not, even if they are forced to spend weekends in the office, work 12 hours a day and I had to postpone my vacation. 'Cause how can you complain when there are thousands of people dead, missing, homeless and more' family?
But a fundraiser must ultimately make money. The fundraiser should make for an event like an earthquake, an economic value, must grasp the potential 'and earning them the best in the future. The fundraiser so 'a figure extremely cynical, perhaps more' than any other, more 'divorce lawyer, the notary, the funeral company.
And yet I am proud to be a fundraiser. For me, the fundraiser and 'the one who' capable of putting aside all moralistic platitudes and 'cause he sees clearly the point of arrival, and why' need for an organization. The fundraiser is not crying over past events, but uses the emotions that follow for a better future.
I am a fundraiser 'cause I chose the head to the heart. Otherwise I would think that the writer, reporter, perhaps the artist.
I apologize, thoughts in freedom 'An evening of luck to all the fundraisers that are taking care of Haiti these days.

Significant and post! "... Clearly see why [...] and 'need for an organization." And also, despite the effort is sometimes absurdly large, because it makes clear to others the existence of such an organization is necessary, so why is it so important to donate. It 'true that the fr "riding the wave", perhaps the difference is that the businessman does so with the push of a balance of heart and mind. Good luck to all the fundraisers, and good job in Virginia!

Hello Virginia, for the work you are doing you the appreciation and admiration of all the staff noi.Far Oxfam is a privilege very demanding.
"I am a fundraiser perche'-say-I chose the head to the heart." .. But your heart has the strength of a locomotive!: Sense and Sensibility.
*** About fundraising for emergencies, we would keep to know your opinion on what Pearl says Ni, CEO of GreatNonprofit.org http://www.ssireview.org that is not to give "hot" on emergencies, because:
"Do not Give Money To Haiti Now.If there is lesson to be learned about Any how to donate to International Disasters, it is this: do not give your money When you first see the disaster splashed across TV. To Ensure the rebuilding effort survives over the long term, donors need to stagger Their funding and guarantee it over many years, instead of sending the money all at once. Yes, as hard as it May Be to watch the pain and dying on our news, Realize That Money is not the impediment to getting aid to Haiti right now. They need military and security forces to help Organize rescue, logistics and transport and security operations. What your money can do is help the long-term food and medical aid while rebuilding takes place Necessary. It will be a rebuilding That will take years, if not decades. Case in point: the Balkan war left some 150,000 dead and half of the country homeless. Responding to the shocking situation, donors Around The World Poured an astounding amount of money into it. More than $ 5 billion was injected into Bosnia-alone Almost $ 1000 For Each of the country 's 4.5 million people. "No central coordinating body recorded, kept track of, or the aid disbursed. Donors did not communicate with one another, and Sometimes double-Funded Projects or similar projects funded in the Same Town. In some instances, donors Turned a blind eye to financial Abuses, "it was later reported" Boom to Bust Balkan "Beth Kampschror, Summer 2006)-Ten years later, look at Bosnia, When Most of the aid money was dried up and the Were donors engaged by other causes, there are agencies Few left to continue the rebuilding. For Haiti, my advice is this: set aside money now for what you Would give Haiti this year and for at least the next 3 years. Give When aid money can logistically get there, get coordinated EFFORTS When, When You can get reports on Which nonprofits are doing what and which ones are on the ground Actually making an impact.
